Trust
Last week we explored what actually is Somatics as the 8 week Somatic Adventure series kicked off. It was so wonderful connecting and sharing with others. Thank you to all who joined! So you don’t miss out…I’ve included a take away practice from Thursday’s Sunrising Meditation and Breath Works Class, it’s at the end of this post. I hope you enjoy it!
In our lives, a disconnection within Trust is inevitable. Either from trauma, the pandemic, or from so many other reasons. So how does one reconnect within Trust?
Recently, I’ve reconnected with a love of mine, the mountain bike. During the pandemic I just couldn’t ride. The technical trails were overwhelming my already overwhelmed soma (mind/body/soul). A few weeks ago, I became ready to hop back in the saddle. This was easier said than done. I had to take small steps to reconnect and learn to trust again. I had to learn to trust myself, trust my bike, and trust my self on the bike, once again.
I found that I already had trust. I had trust that my heart would constantly beat. I had trust that my lungs will fill with breath and empty. When I began to trust in my body that trust began to expand to my mind. I began to trust that my mind would have thoughts and that my mind would seek adventures. This gave me confidence in myself. And maybe within this confidence and trust…maybe it will begin to reconnect my trust within others, my trust within the world because of the trust from within me.
In this weeks Somatic Adventures, the focus will began with trust in our body. Trust that our breath will inhale and exhale within movement, trust that our body will release and be supported within our movements. Then focus that trust in our minds, trust that we will have thoughts yet we will find our way back to our breath, our body, and the present.

Take Away Practice
Notice the Natural Breath
One of the first steps to a breath practice is to take notice of your natural breathing. Do this practice for a few moments in the morning, afternoon break, or before bed for a few minutes, 5 mins, 10 mins, or up to 30 mins. Maybe even try to do this practice for 5 mins each day for two weeks, see if it will become part of your daily routine.
Either lie down on the floor, in your bed, or sitting on a cushion or in a chair.
Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
Breathe naturally and just observe your natural breath, do nothing but observe.
After a few breaths ask or ponder the following questions as you breath.
Take notice of the inhale:
What does the inhale feel like?
What happens in your body?
What do you feel initiates the inhalations?
Where do you feel the breath?
In the nose?
Ribs?
In your chest?
belly?
Back body?
throat?
What changes do you feel in you body as you inhale?
What changes do you feel in your mind as you inhale?
Begin to take notice of when you are full of breath:
What to do you feel at the peak of each inhale?
What is the lengthen of your natural pause?
What changes do you feel in you body when full of breath?
What changes do you feel in your mind when full of breath?
Begin to take notice of the exhale:
Where do you first feel the movement into exhalation?
Does the breath tend to rush out?
How does the pace of the exhale change as the breath continues to flow out?
What changes do you feel in you body as the breath leaves?
What changes do you feel in your mind as the breath leaves?
Begin to take notice when empty of breath:
What do you feel when empty of breath?
How long do you tend to hold the breath out?
Do you feel any gripping or holding?
What changes do you feel in you body when empty of breath?
What changes do you feel in your mind when empty of breath?
Again, don’t do anything during this practice but observe your natural breath. Once finished with the practice take a few breaths without observation then slowly flutter your eyes open and just take notice of how your body, mind feels after the practice. Maybe even journal your experience. And maybe even take this observation of breath with you as you move throughout your day.
